Week 22 of Pregnancy: Baby’s Growth and Body Changes

Power of Positive Affirmations. Words have power, and using positive affirmations can help you stay grounded and confident as you navigate pregnancy. Try repeating uplifting phrases to ease stress and boost your mood.
How Your Pets React to Pregnancy. Noticing changes in your pet’s behavior? Many animal lovers believe that dogs and cats can sense pregnancy-related hormonal shifts. Some pets become extra protective, while others may cuddle up to your belly.
Plus-Size Pregnancy: What You Should Know. If you have a plus-size body, you can still have a healthy pregnancy! While there are some additional risks, most can be managed with regular prenatal care and a healthy lifestyle.
Your Baby’s Development at 22 Weeks
Baby’s First Hairs Appear. Your baby’s head now has fine, visible hair. This may stay soft and sparse or grow into a full head of thick locks by birth! Lanugo, a fine, downy hair, also covers your baby’s body for warmth.
Hearing Your Heartbeat and More. Your little one is now able to hear internal sounds like your heartbeat, breathing, and digestive noises. These familiar sounds may help soothe your baby after birth!
The Start of Baby Fat. A layer of fat is beginning to form under your baby’s skin. Though still tiny and lean, these fat stores will help regulate body temperature after birth.
Common Pregnancy Symptoms at 22 Weeks
Acne Breakouts. Even if you’ve never had skin issues before, pregnancy hormones can cause breakouts. Before using acne treatments, consult your doctor to ensure they’re safe for pregnancy.
Spider Veins Appear. These tiny red or blue veins may show up on your legs or face due to increased blood volume. Unlike varicose veins, they don’t bulge but can be managed with exercise and proper circulation.
Unexpected Diarrhea. Though constipation is more common, some women experience diarrhea due to hormonal changes, diet, or mild food sensitivities. Stay hydrated and check with your doctor if symptoms persist.
Swelling and Fluid Retention. Your body is holding onto more water, and your uterus is pressing on veins, slowing blood return from your legs. Keep your feet elevated and stay active to help reduce swelling.
Leg Cramps at Night. Cramping in your calves may start in the second trimester, especially when you’re resting. Stretching before bed and staying hydrated can help.
Pelvic Discomfort. Weight gain and shifting posture can put pressure on your pelvis. A maternity support belt or gentle stretching may provide relief.
Checklist for Week 22
✅ Start Planning Your Baby Shower
Traditionally, moms-to-be don’t throw their own baby showers, but you can give input on the theme, guest list, and fun activities.
✅ Boost Your Iron Intake
Your body needs extra iron for blood production. Eat iron-rich foods or ask your doctor if you need a supplement.
✅ Sign Up for Birth Classes
From Lamaze to HypnoBirthing, there are many ways to prepare for labor. Online or in-person classes can help you feel more confident about giving birth.
✅ Watch for Carpal Tunnel Symptoms
If your hands feel numb or tingly, pregnancy swelling might be the culprit. Take breaks when using your hands for repetitive tasks and try wrist stretches.
22 Weeks Baby Bump: How Your Belly is Changing
At 22 weeks pregnant, your belly is growing steadily! Your uterus is now about an inch above your belly button, making your baby bump more prominent. Depending on your body type and clothing, your bump may be unmistakable or still somewhat subtle.

You might also notice changes in your belly’s skin—such as itchiness, stretch marks, or even a dark line (linea nigra) running down the center. As your bump expands, wearing comfortable, stretchy maternity clothes can help you feel more at ease.
By this stage, your baby is around 11.4 inches long and weighs about 1.05 pounds—roughly the size of a sweet potato. You may feel stronger and more frequent kicks as your little one grows!
